Tens of thousands of passengersí bags stacked high in temporary storage, scuffles breaking out between staff and customers and the Olympic torch having to be re-routed. The stories coming out of Heathrowís Terminal 5 seem to pile on the misery ñ so what went wrong?
First of all, letís re-phrase that. What lessons can we all learn about this very high-profile ëprojectí (more about that word shortly)? I say this because learning lessons should be a principle that we all should take to our hearts.
It all started so well. I remember hearing the BBC report stating that Terminal 5 at Heathrow was being officially opened and that the project is coming in "on time and in budget". Now I know that makes a good (and unusual) story for a major project, but the thinking behind the comment told us a lot about what people thought mattered most.
